Message from Sam

From the time I started Cherub in 2002, my mission has been "to educate and support parents in creating happy, healthy children and families". Over the years, I have enjoyed meeting so many parents who are committed to creating and nurturing their own happy, healthy families. Those of you who have taken a course or talked with me personally know - there are no easy answers or magic tricks. Parenting well is learning and practicing as you go. The most important things I learned from my own parents:

  • Get to know each of your children and treat him or her as an individual and don't compare.

  • Invest a great amount of time and energy - they need you, not stuff.

  • Be a good role-model. Our children do what we do, not what we say.

  • Live each day and enjoy the ages and stages. My mom had six children (in eight years), was a school teacher and foster parent. I asked her one time why she never talked about "the terrible two's" and she said "Why would I call you kids terrible when you were doing what you were supposed to do at that age?"

  • Believe in your children and give them the gift of self-confidence. "My kids can do anything they put their mind to", my dad said my whole life and even now, when the going gets tough and I'm ready to give up, I hear his words and keep going.

  • Treat your children as if they were the most important people in the world

I do the same with my children and hope you will too. Let me know how it goes or if I can help in any way.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy family,
Sam Rafoss
