Based on my research, budget and personal shopping habits, these are my lists for buying the best produce for nutrition, health and budget.
The list of “Always Organic” (unless I know the source) is based on my knowledge, research and the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) list of produce with the highest pesticide residue. The “Non-Organic” list is also based on the above and has the lowest pesticide residue. The “Local” list is those products that can be purchased without having the organic label, especially if you know the source. Many local farmers are not certified organic, yet still use sustainable farming methods and do not use pesticides. Buy foods in season for the best taste and nutritional value and for the best price. Head to the local farmer’s market and get to know your growers!

Radura symbol |
**When buying non-organic, watch for the Radura symbol which means that the food has been irradiated. Irradiation or “treated with radiation” is a controversial preservation process during which food products are exposed to ionizing radiation to extend shelf life and kill insects, fungi and some bacteria. Unfortunately, in the process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals. Food irradiation cannot be used on any product labeled as "organic."
